The Irv and Joe Game

The History and Origin of the Irv and Joe Game

Before Bob and Dan tricked the powers at Susquehanna Radio (now Cumulus Media Partners) into giving them a job, they were listeners, they loved radio and they loved sports, so obviously they enjoyed the medium in which they make their living today.

It was a sunny day on September 18, 2002, when Bob and Dan (and the great Engineering Chief - Rob Chickering) were returning from Breckenridge, Colorado, to the airport in Denver. On this day, they decided to sample the local radio scene in Denver and enjoyed the fine work of the afternoon drive "Irv and Joe" show on KFAN in Denver.

That was where the game was born.

Now it is played whenever BaD Radio hits the road. The game, which consists of Bob and Dan each calling the show as typical callers, is decided by whoever is able to high-jack the show with greater flair and for a longer duration. It comes down to who can waste more time on the air, with additional points being scored based on the ability to:

a) insert other Ticket hosts names
b) switch to as many topics as possible and
c) top off the call with "babyarm".
These scores are totaled and the winner (usually Dan) is declared...

Game 1 - Denver, Colorado - September 18, 2002 - KKFN 950 - Irv and Joe

Dan wins, 5:28 to 5:23 in the first ever match.

Game 2 - College Station, Texas - October 2002 - KZNE 1150 - Chip Howard

Dan wins, 4:45 to 3:20, (we think) since Flake Boy lost the audio to this match. No audio exists...

Game 3 - Lubbock, Texas - November 2002 - KKAM 1340 - The Cafe

Dan wins again, Scoreboard!!

Game 4 - Houston at Super Bowl XXXVIII

Dan wins a disputed and controversial victory over Sports Sturm...

Game 5 - Jacksonville at Super Bowl XXXVIV

Dan destroys Bob with a victory over a poor host who lost his job a month later...

Game 6 - Detroit at Super Bowl XL

BaD Radio descends on an unsuspecting Red Wings post-game show where Dan extends his dominance over Bob with a record 6:30 minute call over the pathetic 3 min offering from Bob.

Game 7 - Miami at the NBA Finals - Mavs vs Heat in 2006

Bob gets sweet revenge by getting his first victory by hitting Kevin Rogers at 790 - The Ticket with an impressive 5:10 call that defeated Dan's 3:35 minute effort.

Game 8 - Super Bowl XLI in Miami 2007

We called the same victim from game 7 (Kevin Rogers with The Ticket - no relation - 790) and added two rookies... Donovan and Grubes. All-time Irv and Joe leader Dan got snuffed out early by an ill-timed commercial break. Grubes made his mark with a genius quivering- Norm call mourning the loss of our favorite thoroughbred - Barbaro. So that left Donovan and Bob to duke it out. It was close but Bob (3:50) earned the victory by miniscule 5 seconds.

9. Irv and Joe - Super Bowl XLII - Phoenix

Donovan grabs his first Irv and Joe victory pairing up with the very talkative (and The King of the Suggested Talk Topics - a record 13 for one segment) Bob Kemp at The Fan by crushing Bob and Dan with a call of 6 minutes, complete with 6 topic changes. We also thank Craig Jr Miller for his call suggesting that Amare Stoudemire should replace 2 Time MVP Steve Nash as the Suns starting Point Guard. And Tom for his call with a stupid, over-the-top New York accent.
